April 1, 2003 -- LINKS, the Best of Golf Magazine; just released their April 2003 issue focusing on the Augusta Masters. The other big story in the publication covered the Lake Oconee region and went back to the first golf course in 1995, developed by Pete Bailey (now owner of Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee) at Port Armor. Yet Bob Cupp was just the beginning, as now the 19,000-acre lake is the centerpiece for seven golf courses along its 374 miles of shoreline.
Cuscowilla’s classic Coore and Crenshaw course was featured in the magazine with a huge picture of one of the scruffy bunkers and minimalist fairways (#5). The article went on to state, “Cuscowilla is a small serene development on the lake’s west bank.” Particular mention was made of the “red soiled, ragged edge bunkers being surely among the most distinctive in America.”
The article went on to talk about all of the golf communities on Lake Oconee, advising its readers to get “hooked on Lake Oconee, once merely an oversized fishing hole, this heart-of-Georgia reservoir is now home to some of the best golf in the South.” Cuscowilla’s General Manager, Andrew Ward, stated, “It’s great to see all of the courses on Lake Oconee receiving national coverage and its deserved renowned reputation.”
