Cuscowilla awards $20,000.00 in Scholarships to local college students at their annual event
November 6, 2002 -- Recently at the second annual Cuscowilla Sandy Chiu Caddy Scholarship Tournament, five eager caddies were rewarded for their hard work with a well-earned scholarship. The Sandy Chiu Caddy Scholarship fund was established in honor of Sandy Chiu, the daughter of Bob Chiu former Vice President of marketing with Mizuno USA. The previous scholarships awarded last year were promptly doubled this year by generous donations by members of Cuscowilla and those of the surrounding areas. Each of the five caddies received a $4,000 scholarship to help them with the financial needs of a college education. The money has to be used towards the continuing education of the student.
This years winners, Mark Musselwhite, Mark Scarborough, Agustin Berroeta, Poli Medrano, and Andy Pelphrey, all attend Georgia College and State University as full time students and are required to maintain at least a 2.50 GPA while caddying at Cuscowilla at least twice a month. Each Caddie also had to write an essay explaining how important their caddying experiences at Cuscowilla have been over the last year.
The Golf Club at Cuscowilla wishes to thank everyone who participated in this year\'s event as well as those who contributed to the Sandy Chiu Caddy Scholarship fund. Mizuno heavily sponsors the annual event, and flight winners of the golf tournament were given Mizuno clubs and golf accessories. A silent auction with Braves memorabilia was also on hand to further raise funds for this valuable cause.
Andrew Ward, General Manager at Cuscowilla praised the efforts of all concerned in the fund raiser….\"it is great to give something back to the community\" he explains…\" without the support of our caddies the Cuscowilla golf experience would not be the same. Over the last four years we have been able to help many of our caddies through college, initially with the wages they earn with us, and more recently with the scholarships we offer. These young men grow in stature every time they complete a loop of golf, and aspire to one day be on the \'other side\' of the golf bag!\". Ward continued, \"we are very lucky to have Cuscowilla resident Bob Chui and his wonderful daughter Sandy, involved in spearheading this scholarship, and the valued support of Mizuno too. Without the excellent support of our members it also would be impossible to make this a success\".
Ward sums up by saying \"under the operational guidance of Director of Golf, Chuck Little, and Head Golf Professional Jarrod Clark and their team, the whole event proved to be a wonderful success\". The winning foursome of the event are all Cuscowilla members, two of which are Cuscowilla residents too.
