March 1, 2003 -- Golf Digest May 2003 issue has just been released, together with their selection of America\'s 100 Greatest Public Courses. The list consists of the very best courses in America that offer daily fee play at their Club. Golf Digest has conducted America\'s 100 Greatest Golf Course rankings since 1966, making it the oldest and most respected ranking in the game. The magazine\'s panel of 850 low handicap, male and female golfers nationwide, played and rated the courses on the following criteria: shot value, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning, ambience, and walk ability.
After the panelist filed their evaluations, Golf Digest averaged the scores of the categories, and totaled the averages to determine the overall rankings. Top of the list is Pebble Beach, with Pine Hurst at #2. Georgia\'s highest ranked golf course in the respected list is Sea Island at #32 with Cuscowilla Golf Club ranking second highest in the state.
Cuscowilla\'s General Manager, Andrew Ward, reflects \"Although we are a semi-private Club we also allow play to resort guests and members of the public, and therefore we are delighted to rank so high in America. This is further evidence that the wonderful unique course that designers\' Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore have created for us; and our golf team, headed by Rusty Mercer, Chuck Little, and Jarrod Clark is maintained and operated to the highest level, helping it to be so highly respected and regarded throughout the Nation.\"
